About Lions
A Chicago man named Melvin Jones is
the founder of the Lions Club Association. He believed
that local business groups should share their successes
by helping those less fortunate than themselves.
Groups from all over the United States
met and took the name "Association of Lions Clubs".
The association became international in 1920 when a club
was formed in Canada. The international expansion then
spread to Europe, Asia and Africa.
The Lions club came to Ireland in 1955
when the first club was formed in Dublin. There are now
114 clubs in Ireland.
The Lions motto is "WE SERVE".
Lions serve in any way they can for the benefit of the
local and international community.
"Lions" stand for "Liberty,
Intelligence and Our Nations Safety". The official
colours of purple and gold stand for loyalty, integrity,
sincerity and generosity.
