SightFirst Campaign

Up to 80% of cases of blindness are avoidable through prevention measures or adequate treatment.

In 1925, a young lady named Helen Keller challenged the Lions to become "Knights of the Blind in the crusade against darkness".

Since then, Lions clubs all over the world have introduced and supported projects that provide aid to those with sight related illlnesses.

The Lions "SightFirst" campaign was launched in 1990. Projects to fight cataract, train ophthalmic staff and to combat river blindness are underway in over 78 countries.

Portlaoise Lions Club supports "SightFirst" by collecting used eyeglasses. These are recycled - cleaned, repaired and classified by prescription. They are then distributed to those in need by Lions volunteers and other voluntary organisations with optical missions in developing countries.

Please contact us if you have any unused eyeglasses that you would like to donate to this worthy campaign.
